GDC launches priority ORE booking for refugees
- published / updated on:
In an effort to support dental professionals who have refugee status, the General Dental Council (GDC) has introduced a new initiative offering priority access to the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE). This change is aimed at helping qualified refugee dental professionals who are seeking to continue their careers in the UK, removing some of the barriers they face in accessing the exam and joining the UK’s dental workforce.
What Does This New Policy Mean?
Starting in April 2025, dental professionals with refugee status will have access to a priority booking system for the ORE. This means they can book their exam two weeks before the general public. This change is specifically designed to give these professionals a fairer chance to sit the exam without unnecessary delays, ensuring they can get started on their career path in the UK as quickly as possible.
To be eligible for this priority access, candidates must have refugee status, granted through the UN Refugee Convention or other specific schemes, like those for Ukraine or Afghanistan.
Why Is This So Important?
Refugee dental professionals often face significant challenges when trying to practice in the UK. These can include difficulties accessing the right documents, language barriers, or even the inability to return to their home countries for necessary verification. By offering priority booking, the GDC is helping to remove some of these obstacles, allowing these talented professionals to bring their skills to the UK workforce sooner.
This policy change is also a step toward addressing the shortage of dental professionals in the UK, making it easier for qualified refugees to contribute to a system that’s facing growing demand. At the same time, it ensures that the GDC continues to uphold its high standards for dental practice across the country. Refugee candidates will still need to meet the same rigorous qualifications as everyone else taking the ORE.
A Move Toward Inclusivity
This new priority access is a reflection of the UK’s commitment to the UN Refugee Convention and a sign of the GDC’s dedication to inclusivity within the dental profession. It’s not just about making things easier for refugees—it’s about giving them the chance to rebuild their careers, integrate into the healthcare system, and, ultimately, help provide essential care to communities across the UK.
In a time when healthcare professionals are needed more than ever, this initiative shows that the GDC is actively supporting diversity and equality in the dental workforce. It’s a small but meaningful step towards a more inclusive, fair, and resilient healthcare system.
